Maybe you watch a lot of movies, and you sometimes ask yourself that what am I gaining from watching these movies?
Many a time, we think to our selves that watching movies are a complete waste of time. Personally, I did think at a point that watching movies is like patronising the business of others while they make me lazy.
But then, I sat down to ponder carefully then I came to the realisation that there are some hidden benefits of watching benefits that you might not realise.
But we subconsciously or even consciously enjoy those benefits anytime we watch movies.
Let’s take a look at some of those benefits of watching videos below:
1. Films help us learn
Movies are an avenue to learn a lot of things. Speaking from experience, I learn a lot about the culture of other nations as I watch movies from those countries.
Personally, I also pick up a lot of vocabulary while watching films. I always check up words I don’t understand in the dictionary and they in turn form my bank of vocabulary.
We also tend to learn on other fields of studies. For example, while watching ‘Breaking Bad’ series, I got to learn so much about Heart Cancer since the lead character ‘Walter White’ suffered from it.
So even though I didn’t seat to read any book about heart cancer, I learnt it just by watching the movie.
Throught movies, I have learnt how drug cartels in Mexico, Columbia, among other places work — I got to learn this while watching Narcos, El Chapo, Queen of the South, etc.
2. Relieves Stress.
You’ve had a tough day at work or at school and it made you all stressed up. There could be a lot of ways to relieve stress but one of the ways is through watching movies.
Movies mostly require total focus — focusing on the movie makes you to forget about all your life problems for the few minutes that you spend watching the film.
Especially when the movie has a happy ending, it sparks this fresh feeling of relief in our innermost parts.
It has been medically proven that stress is caused by a continuous build up of tension within a person and without a way to relieve it, then stress is inevitable.
One of the best ways to relieve the buildup of tension is through watching movies.
3. Provides Encouragement
Watching movies can give you hope. It can give you this drive to believe in yourself. Watching inspiration stories of people in a movie can give you hope for survival.
It can boost your energy to keep trying hard and that doors would surely open someday.
Watching normal people change into heroes during the story can inspire or encourage you to do the same in your daily life.
The old age stories of the victory of the good over evil and the ‘never give up’ one’s are apt at towards their objective. Films inspire us to be brave, clever, insightful, experimental, loyal, determined and other virtues which make us positive minded.
4. Movies stir our Imagination
The weirdest, the most extreme, the most unbelievable things are shown in movies. Some films are based on comic book characters, adaptations of novel or drama.
They bring to life the inanimate and it requires imagination. Today, we have so many techniques and instruments which show us the unseen and unimagined.
Both the viewers and the movie directors conceive ideas towards their own personal objectives. The audience witness’s audio-video which enhances their imagination and their feedback inspires more varied imagination.
5. Helps to understand why some people act in certain way
Movies like Taare zameen par which focuses on “Dyslexia” beautifully shows why some childrens have difficulties in studying..before I watched this movie even I didn’t use to get why some children don’t study or don’t understand what they study and even I used to believe that they just don’t want to study..but the this movie made me realise that I was wrong.
6. To increase the knowledge of one’s own country
A movie can help us to visually experience what happened in our country during freedom which is more understandable than a textbook. If you are too bored to read a textbook on freedom fighters like Gandhi —well there is a whole movie about this freedom fighter.
7. Can make us feel what we usually don’t feel in our every day life
It allows us to visually step into the boots of actors and experience what they are going through. Movies can make us witness the horror of serial killer, it can make us laugh, it can inspire us, it can make us cry, it makes our brain to think about the twist in the plot which was completely unexpected.
8. Films can drive social change
Movies have helped in driving social change over the years. Films teach viewers about experiences outside their own perspective, inspire empathy, and raise politically charged questions.
Movies help in preaching message against racism, discrimination against special needs people, discrimination against LGBTQI+ community, among other things.
